O Cometa Hale-Bopp, o Grande Cometa de 1997, tornou-se muito mais brilhante do que qualquer estrela em seu entorno. Ele foi visto sobre brilhantes luzes de cidades. Entretanto, distante das luzes das cidades, ele proporcionou um espetáculo espetacular. Aqui, o Cometa Hale-Bopp foi fotografado sobre Val Parola Pass, nas montanhas Dolomitas ao redor de Cortina d'Ampezzo, Itália. 

A cauda azul de íons do Cometa Hale-Bopp, que consiste em íos do seu núcleo, foi atraída para fora pelo vento solar. A cauda de poeira azul é composta de partículas maiores de poeira do núcleo alimentadas pela pressão da luz solar, que orbitam por trás do cometa. 

O Cometa Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) permaneceu visível a olho nu por 18 meses — mais tempo do que qualquer outro cometa de que se tem registro na história. 

Este ano marca o 20º aniversário da última viagem do Cometa Hale-Bopp' ao interior do Sistema Solar. O retorno do grande cometa é esperado para mais ou menos o longínquo ano de 4385 (!!!). Da forma como a humanidade vem tratando nosso planeta, será que ainda haverá então algum sobrevivente para ver  o Hale-Bopp?

Comet Hale-Bopp, the Great Comet of 1997, became much brighter than any surrounding stars. It was seen even over bright city lights. Away from city lights, however, it put on quite a spectacular show. Here Comet Hale-Bopp was photographed above Val Parola Pass in the Dolomite mountains surrounding Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. 

Comet Hale-Bopp's blue ion tail, consisting of ions from the comet's nucleus, is pushed out by the solar wind. The white dust tail is composed of larger particles of dust from the nucleus driven by the pressure of sunlight, that orbit behind the comet. 

Comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) remained visible to the unaided eye for 18 months -- longer than any other comet in recorded history. 

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Comet Hale-Bopp's last trip to the inner Solar System. The large comet is next expected to return around the very distant year 4385 (!!!). Given the way  mankind has been treating our planet, we should wonder if then there will still be any sole survivor to see the Hale-Bopp...
