Atualmente posicionado contra os ricos campos estelares e nebulosas de nossa galaxia, o brilhante planeta Jupiter brilha no ceu noturno. Seu brilho quase ofuscante está no alto da imagem neste colorido retrato de telefoto da parte central da Via Lactea.
Espalhando-se por cerca de 20 graus no firmamento, a cena inclui a silhueta de LDN 1773 contra a luz solar, sendo ela também conhecida pelo nome popular de Nebulosa do Cachimbo, devido aos seus contornos que lembram um cachimbo.
A Nebulosa do Cachimbo faz parte do complexo Ofiuco de nuvens escuras da galaxia. Localizados à distancia de aproximadamente 450 anos-luz, densos nucleos de gas e poeira no interior estão desmoronando para formar estrelas.
Aproximando-se de sua oposição, oposto ao Sol no céu em 12 de junho, Jupiter está distante do planeta Terra apenas cerca de 36 minutos-luz. Os apreciadores de marcas escuras no céu podem, provavelmente, localizar a Nebulosa da Cobra abaixo e à esquerda do brilho de Jupiter.

Now posing against our galaxy's rich starfields and nebulae, brilliant planet Jupiter shines in the night sky. Its almost overwhelming glow is near the top of the frame in this colorful telephoto portrait of the central Milky Way.
Spanning about 20 degrees on the sky, the scene includes the silhouette of LDN 1773 against the starlight, also know by the popular moniker the Pipe Nebula for its apparent outline of stem and bowl.
The Pipe Nebula is part of the galaxy's Ophiuchus dark cloud complex. Located at a distance of about 450 light-years, dense cores of gas and dust within are collapsing to form stars.
Approaching its opposition, opposite the Sun in the sky on June 12, Jupiter is only about 36 light-minutes from planet Earth. Fans of dark markings on the sky can probably spot the Snake Nebula below and left of Jupiter's glare.
