Este anel flutuante tem o tamanho de uma galaxia. Na verdade, ele é uma galaxia — ou, pelo menos, parte de uma: a fotogenica galaxia do Sombrero, uma das maiores do vizinho Aglomerado Galactico de Virgem.
A faixa escura de poeira que obscurece a seção intermediaria da Sombrero em luz optica, na verdade, brilha forte em luz infravermelha. Esta imagem, digitalmente aprimorada, mostra o brilho infravermelho, recentemente registrado pelo Telescopio Espacial Spitzer da NASA, superposto em cores artificiais em uma imagem existente obtida atraves do Hubble em luz optica.
A galaxia do Sombrero, tambem chamada M104, estende-se por cerca de 50.000 anos-luz de diametro e situa-se á distancia de 28 milhões de anos-luz. M104 pode ser observada atraves de pequenos telescopios na direção da constelação de Virgem.

This floating ring is the size of a galaxy. In fact, it is a galaxy -- or at least part of one: the photogenic Sombrero Galaxy, one of the largest galaxies in the nearby Virgo Cluster of Galaxies.
The dark band of dust that obscures the mid-section of the Sombrero Galaxy in optical light actually glows brightly in infrared light. The featured image, digitally sharpened, shows the infrared glow, recently recorded by the orbiting Spitzer Space Telescope, superposed in false-color on an existing image taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in optical light.
The Sombrero Galaxy, also known as M104, spans about 50,000 light years across and lies 28 million light years away. M104 can be seen with a small telescope in the direction of the constellation Virgo.
