A caminho de Carina | On the Road to Carina

A acidentada estrada que corta o escuro Deserto Atacama parece seguir na direção do céu, rumo às estrelas e nebulosas brilhantes da região sul da Via Láctea. Seguindo em frente, chega-se ao Pico Cerro Armazones, no Chile, local da futura construção do Telescópio Europeu Ultra Grande, da classe de 40 metros.

Nesta imagem, o cenário é dominado pelo brilho avermelhado da Grande Nebulosa Carina, uma das maiores regiões de formação estelar da nossa galáxia. 

A notável paisagem não é uma composição várias imagens com tempos de exposição variados, nem uma fotomontagem. Longe das fontes de poluição luminosa, a paisagem iluminada pela luz das estrelas e a Via Láctea acima foram registradas por uma câmera digital modificada e lentes velozes. O sensível sistema captou ambos, planeta Terra e o céu profundo com um tempo de exposição relativamente curto. 

This rugged road through the dark Atacama Desert seems to lead skyward toward the bright stars and glowing nebulae of the southern Milky Way. If you follow the road you will get to Cerro Armazones peak in Chile, future construction site for the 40-meter class European Extremely Large Telescope. 

For now though, sliding your cursor across the image will identify wonders of the southern skies in view. The scene is dominated by the reddish glow of the Great Carina Nebula, one of our galaxy's largest star forming regions.

In fact, the remarkable skyscape is not a composite of varying exposures or a photomontage. Far from sources of light pollution, the landscape illuminated by starlight and the Milky Way above were recorded by a modified digital camera and fast lens. The sensitive system captured both planet Earth and deep sky in a relatively short exposure.
