The Leo Triplet Galaxies / O Trio Leo de galáxias

Este grupo popular é famoso e conhecido como a Trinca  Leo - um agrupamento de três diferentes e magnéficas galáxias em um só campo de visão.

Fazem a alegria de multidões mesmo quando observados com telescópios modestos, essas galáxias podem ser apresentadas individualmente como  NGC 3628 (topo), M66 (embaixo, à esquerda), e M65 (embaixo, à direita). Todas as três são grandes galáxias espirais. Elas tendem a parecer diferentes porque seus discos galácticos estão enviesados em ângulos diferentes em relação à nossa linha de visão.

A NGC 3628 aparece de lado, com trilhas de poeira obscurecentes cortando através do disco galáctico, enquanto os discos da M66 e M65 estão ambos inclinados o suficiente para mostrar suas estruturas espirais.

Interações gravitacionais entre galáxias no grupo também deixaram sinais intrigantes, inclusive o disco inflado e entortado da NGC 3628  e os braços espirais retraídos da M66.

Esta deslumbrante visão da região foi obtida pelo novo Telescópio de Pesquisas VLT Survey Telescope (VST) e se espalha por cerca de um grau de arco (duas luas cheias) no céu. O campo cobre mais de 500 mil anos-luz à distância estimada do trio, de 30 milhões de anos-luz.

This popular group is famous as the Leo Triplet - a gathering of three magnificent galaxies in one field of view. Crowd pleasers when imaged with even modest telescopes, these galaxies can be introduced individually as NGC 3628 (top), M66 (bottom left), and M65 (bottom right).

All three are large spiral galaxies. They tend to look dissimilar because their galactic disks are tilted at different angles to our line of sight. NGC 3628 is seen edge-on, with obscuring dust lanes cutting across the plane of the galaxy, while the disks of M66 and M65 are both inclined enough to show off their spiral structure.

Gravitational interactions between galaxies in the group have also left telltale signs, including the warped and inflated disk of NGC 3628 and the drawn out spiral arms of M66.

This gorgeous deep view of the region was taken by the new VLT Survey Telescope (VST) and spans about one degree (two full moons) on the sky. The field covers over 500 thousand light-years at the trio's estimated distance of 30 million light-years.
