The Antikythera Mechanism / O Mecanismo Antikythera

O que é isto? Foi encontrado no fundo do mar  a bordo de um antigo navio grego. Sua aparente complexidade levou décadas de estudos, embora algumas de suas funções permaneçam  incompreendidas.

Recentes raios-X do dispositivo confirmaram agora a natureza do Mecanismo Antikythera, e revelaram várias funções surpreendentes. O Mecanismo Antikythera revelou-se um computador mecânico de exatidão tida como impossível em 80 aC, quando o navio que o transportava afundou.

O desenvolvimento de tão sofisticada tecnologia não  era um feito esperado da  humanidade por ao menos 1.000 anos. Suas rodas e engrenagens criam um planetário portátil do céu que previu a localização de estrelas e planetas, além de eclipses solares e lunares.

O Mecanismo Antikythera, na foto, tem 33 centímetros de altura e dimensões parecidas às de uma grande livro.

What is it? It was found at the bottom of the sea aboard an ancient Greek ship. Its seeming complexity has prompted decades of study, although some of its functions remained unknown.

Recent X-rays of the device have now confirmed the nature of the Antikythera mechanism, and discovered several surprising functions. The Antikythera mechanism has been discovered to be a mechanical computer of an accuracy thought impossible in 80 BC, when the ship that carried it sunk.

Such sophisticated technology was not thought to be developed by humanity for another 1,000 years. Its wheels and gears create a portable orrery of the sky that predicted star and planet locations as well as lunar and solar eclipses.
