Uma viagem de trem pela ferrovia Trans-Siberiana para Novosibirsk, Rússia, permitiu uma impressionante vista da borda do Sol, durante o eclipse total de 1º de agosto.
A foto é uma composição de duas imagens feitas em momentos especiais na seqüência do eclipse, correspondendo bem ao começo e bem no final da fase do eclipse total.
Essas fases são chamadas pelos pesquisadores de eclipses de 2º e 3º contato.
Os pontos brilhantes em torno da silhueta escura da Lua são raios de luz solar brilhando através de vales lunares nas bordas do disco lunar. Mas a imagem composta também mostra proeminências solares, estruturas em "looping" de plasma quente suspenso por campos magnéticos, estendendo-se além das bordas do Sol.

The picture is a composite of two images taken at special moments in the eclipse sequence, corresponding to the very beginning and the very end of the total eclipse phase.
Those times are known to eclipse chasers as 2nd and 3rd contact.
Bright beads around the Moon's dark silhouette are rays of sunlight shining through lunar valleys at the edge of the lunar disk. But the composite view also captures solar prominences, looping structures of hot plasma suspended in magnetic fields, extending beyond the Sun's edge.
