Messier 15 é uma reliquida de 13 bilhões de idade do universo primordial nos anos de formação de nossa galaxia, um entre cerca de 170 aglomerados estelares globulares que ainda povoam o halo da Via Lactea.
Com cerca de 200 anos-luz de diametro, ele se situa á distancia de uns 35.000 anos-luz, na direção da constelação de Pegaso. Mas esta vista realistica do antigo aglomerado estelar globular não é uma fotografia. Em vez disso, trata-se de uma imagem gif animada construída a partir de medições individuais notavelmente precisas de posições, intensidade de brilho e cores de estrelas.
O conjunto de dados astronomicamente rico utilizado foi feito pelo satelite de varredura Gaia, que também determinou distancias de paralaxe de 1.3 bilhão de estrelas da Via Lactea.
No gif animado, as estrelas piscantes são as LL Lyrae identificadas de M15. Abundantes em M15, as estrelas RR são estrelas pulsateis variaveis evoluidas cuja intensidade de brilho e periodo de pulsação, typicamente inferiores a um dia, estão relacionados.

Messier 15 is a 13 billion year old relic of the early formative years of our galaxy, one of about 170 globular star clusters that still roam the halo of the Milky Way.
About 200 light-years in diameter, it lies about 35,000 light years away toward the constellation Pegasus. But this realistic looking view of the ancient globular star cluster is not a photograph. Instead it's an animated gif image constructed from remarkably precise individual measurements of star positions, brightness, and color.
The astronomically rich data set used was made by the sky-scanning Gaia satellite which also determined parallax distances for 1.3 billion Milky Way stars. In the animated gif, twinkling stars are M15's identified RR Lyrae stars. Plentiful in M15, RR Lyrae stars are evolved pulsating variable stars whose brightness and pulsation period, typically less than a day, are related.
