Clouds of Earth and Sky | Nuvens da Terra e do céu

Se você subir a uma altitude suficiente, poderá se ver em uma pitoresca posição elevada entre as nuvens de vapor de água da Terra e as nuvens de estrelas da Via Lactea. Foi o caso, no mes passado, deste aventureiro alpinista e  astrofotografo. 

Fotografados aqui em primeiro plano acima das nuvens brancas estão picos de montanhas da cadeia das Dolomitas, no norte da Italia. Esta imagem de multiplas exposições foi registrada em Lagazuoi, uma das Dolomitas. 

Centenas de milhões de anos atrás, as Dolomitas não eram montanhas, mas ilhas em um antigo mar que se formou pela colisão de placas tectonicas. A historia divergente das Dolomitas é responsável por suas incomuns caracteristicas contrastantes, dentres as quais cristas irregulares e antigos fosseis marinhos. 

Bem nais alto até mesmo que as Dolomitas, e ao longe, escuras  trilhas de poeira cosmica se projetam do plano central da Via Lactea. As estrelas e a poeira são pontilhadas por nuvens vemelhas brilhantes de gas hidrogenio incandescente — como a Nebulosa da Lagoa, logo acima e à esquerda do centro.

If you go high enough, you may find yourself on a picturesque perch between the water clouds of the Earth and the star clouds of the Milky Way. Such was the case last month for one adventurous alpinist astrophotographer. 

Captured here in the foreground above white clouds are mountain peaks in the Dolomite range in northern Italy. This multi-exposure image was captured from Lagazuoi, one of the Dolomites. 

Hundreds of millions of years ago, the Dolomites were not mountains but islands an ancient sea that rose through colliding tectonic plates. The Dolomites divergent history accounts for its unusually contrasting features, which include jagged crests and ancient marine fossils. 

High above even the Dolomites, and far in the distance, dark dust lanes streak out from the central plane of our Milky Way Galaxy. The stars and dust are dotted with bright red clouds of glowing hydrogen gas -- such as the Lagoon Nebula just above and to the left of center.
