Esta imagem não está borrada. Ela mostra em claros detalhes que a maior galaxia satelite da Via Lactea, a Grande Nuvem de Magalhães (LMC), gira. Determinada pela primeira vez pelo Hubble, a rotação da LMC é apresentada aqui com dados precisos do satelite orbital solar Gaia.
O Gaia mede as posições de estrelas de forma tão precisa que medições subsequentes podem revelar ligeiros movimentos proprios de estrelas não anteriormente detectaveis. Esta imagem mostra, efetivamente, exageradas trilhas de estrelas para milhões de esmaecidas estrelas da LMC.
A inspeção da imagem também mostra que o centro gira no sentido horario: proximo ao topo da barra central da LMC. A LMC, proeminente no ceu do sul, é uma pequena galaxia espiral que foi distorcida por encontros com a Via Lactea, que é maior, e a ainda menor Pequena Nuvem de Magalhães (SMC).

This image is not blurry. It shows in clear detail that the largest satellite galaxy to our Milky Way, the Large Cloud of Magellan (LMC), rotates. First determined with Hubble, the rotation of the LMC is presented here with fine data from the Sun-orbiting Gaia satellite.
Gaia measures the positions of stars so accurately that subsequent measurements can reveal slight proper motions of stars not previously detectable. The featured image shows, effectively, exaggerated star trails for millions of faint LMC stars.
Inspection of the image also shows the center of the clockwise rotation: near the top of the LMC's central bar. The LMC, prominent in southern skies, is a small spiral galaxy that has been distorted by encounters with the greater Milky Way Galaxy and the lesser Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC).
