Distante cerca de 200.000 anos-luz da Terra, a Grande Nuvem de Magalhães, uma galáxia satélite da Via Láctea, flutua no espaço,em uma longa e lenta dança ao redor de nossa galáxia. Vastas nuvens de gás em seu interior lentamente se desmancham, formando novas estrelas. Estas, por sua vez, iluminam as nuvens de gás com uma profusão de cores, visíveis nesta imagem do Telescópio Espacial Hubble da NASA/ESA.
A Grande Nuvem de Magalhães (LMC) brilha intensamente em suas regiões de formação estelar. Da Nebulosa da Tarântula, o mais brilhante berçário estelar de nossas vizinhanças cósmicas, a LHA 120-N 11, parte da qual aparece nesta imagem do Hubble, esta galáxia, pequena e irregular, está cheia de nebulosas brilhantes, o sinal mais evidente do nascimento de novas estrelas.
Nearly 200,000 light-years from Earth, the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, floats in space, in a long and slow dance around our galaxy. Vast clouds of gas within it slowly collapse to form new stars. In turn, these light up the gas clouds in a riot of colors, visible in this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.
The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is ablaze with star-forming regions. From the Tarantula Nebula, the brightest stellar nursery in our cosmic neighborhood, to LHA 120-N 11, part of which is featured in this Hubble image, the small and irregular galaxy is scattered with glowing nebulae, the most noticeable sign that new stars are being born.
