A Ilha Wake | Wake Island

O atol da Ilha Wake está localizado no Oceano Pacífico Central,a sudoeste do  Havaí e a noroeste de Guam. 

O atol inclui a Ilha Peale, menor, e a Ilha Wilkes, com uma superfície terrestre total de 6,5 km². Como em vários atóis do Pacífico, as ilhas e os recifes associados a elas se formaram ao redor de  vulcões submarinos. 

A lagoa ao centro assinala a localização aproximada da cratera no cume. A Ilha Wake foi anexada pelos Estados Unidos da América em 1899, e se tornou uma importante base aérea militar e comercial em 1935. 

Depois do bombardeio de Pearl Harbour, em 1941, o atol foi ocupado por forças japonesas até o final da Segunda Guerra Mundial no Pacífico. 

Atualmente, a administração civil do atol está sob a responsabilidade do Departmento  do Interior dos EUA.

The atoll of Wake Island is located in the central Pacific Ocean, south-west of Hawaii and north-west of Guam. 

The atoll includes the smaller Peale Island and Wilkes Island, for a total land surface area of 6.5 sq km. Like many atolls in the Pacific, the islands and associated reefs formed around a submerged volcano. 

The lagoon in the centre marks the approximate location of the summit crater. Wake Island was annexed by the United States of America in 1899, and it became an important military and commercial airfield by 1935. 

Following the bombing of Pearl Harbour in 1941, the atoll was occupied by Japanese forces until the end of world war two in the Pacific. 

Today, the civil administration of the atoll is the responsibility of the US Department of the Interior.
