A Nebulosa da Cabeça de Bruxa | Witch Head Nebula

Esta é a Nebulosa da Cabeça de Bruxa. Sua reflexão está relacionada à estrela de forte brilho Rigel da  constelação de Orion. 

Formalmente denominada IC 2118, a Nebulosa da Cabeça de Bruxa se estende por cerca de 50 anos-luz, e é composta por grãos de poeira interestelar que refletem a luz da estrela Rigel. Nesta imagem cósmica, a coloração azul de Nebulosa da Cabeça de Bruxa e a poeira em torno de Rigel se deve não só ao intenso brilho de Rigel, mas também ao fato de os grãos de poeira difundirem melhor a luz azul do que a vermelha. 

Trata-se do mesmo processo físico que faz o céu diurno da Terra ter a cor azul, embora os responsáveis por isso na atmosfera terrestre sejam moléculas de nitrogêio e oxigênio. Rigel, a Nebulosa da Cabeça de Bruxa, o gás e a poeira que as circundam estão a uns 800 anos-luz de distância da Terra.

Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble — maybe Macbeth should have consulted the Witch Head Nebula. The suggestively shaped reflection nebula is associated with the bright star Rigel in the constellation Orion.

More formally known as IC 2118, the Witch Head Nebula spans about 50 light-years and is composed of interstellar dust grains reflecting Rigel's starlight. In this cosmic portrait, the blue color of the Witch Head Nebula and of the dust surrounding Rigel is caused not only by Rigel's intense blue starlight but because the dust grains scatter blue light more efficiently than red. 

The same physical process causes Earth's daytime sky to appear blue, although the scatterers in Earth's atmosphere are molecules of nitrogen and oxygen. Rigel, the Witch Head Nebula, and gas and dust that surrounds them lie about 800 light-years away.
