Uma inédita estrutura espiral na matéria ao redor da velha estrela R Sculptoris aparece nesta imagem do Observatório Grande Conjunto Milímetro/submilímetro de Atacama (ALMA), no Chile.
Isso nunca havia sido visto antes, e sua causa provável seria uma estrela oculta orbitando R Sculptoris. Esta imagem em corte com novos dados obtidos pelo ALMA mostra um envoltório ao redor da estrela, formado pelo anel externo, além de uma estrutura espiral muito brilhante no centro.
An unexpected spiral structure in the material around the old star R Sculptoris is revealed by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile.
This feature has never been seen before and is probably caused by a hidden companion star orbiting the star. This slice through the new ALMA data reveals the shell around the star, which shows up as the outer circular ring, as well as a very clear spiral structure in the inner material.
