A imagem acima foi registrada pela Estação Espacial Internacional (ISS) no final de abril, e mostra os conhecidos painéis solares da ISS à esquerda, e parte de um braço robótico bem à direita. O fenômeno, raramente fotografado, é chamado duende vermelho, e pode ser visto, apesar de muito tênue, logo acima da região brilhante na parte direita da imagem.
A região brilhante e o duende vermelho são tipos distintos de relâmpagos, e o clarão branco é o mais comum. Embora tenha haviado relatos imprecisos de duendes há 300 anos, eles foram filmados pela primeira vez em 1989, por acaso.
Pouco se sabe acerca de duendes, como eles ocorrem, e seus efeitos no circuito elétrico atmosférico global, e se eles têm alguma relação com outros fenômenos de relâmpagos na atmosfera superior, tais como jatos azuis ou flashes terrestres de raios gama.

The above image was taken from the orbiting International Space Station (ISS) in late April and shows familiar ISS solar panels on the far left and part of a robotic arm to the far right. The rarely imaged phenomenon is known as a red sprite and it can be seen, albeit faintly, just over the bright area on the image right.
This bright area and the red sprite are different types of lightning, with the white flash the more typical type. Although sprites have been reported anecdotally for as long as 300 years, they were first caught on film in 1989 - by accident.
Much remains unknown about sprites including how they occur, their effect on the atmospheric global electric circuit, and if they are somehow related to other upper atmospheric lightning phenomena such as blue jets or terrestrial gamma flashes.
