Millions of Stars in Omega Centauri / Milhões de estrelas em Omega Centauri

Nesta nítica imagem telescópica, o aglomerado estelar globular Omega Centauri (NGC 5139) está localizado a uns 15.000 anos-luz da Terra. Com cerca de 150 anos-luz de diâmetro, o aglomerado tem por volta de 10 milhões de estrelas muito mais velhas que o Sol. Omega Cen é o maior dos cerca de 200 aglomerados globulares conhecidos que cruzam o halo de nossa galáxia Via Láctea.

Embora a maioria dos aglomerados estelares consista em estrelas com a mesma idade e composição, o enigmático Omega Cen exibe a presença de diferentes populações estelares com uma gama de idades e abundância de composições químicas.Na verdade, Omega Cen  pode ser o núcleo remanescente de uma pequena galáxia que se fundiu com a Via Láctea.

Featured in this sharp telescopic image, globular star cluster Omega Centauri (NGC 5139) is some 15,000 light-years away. Some 150 light-years in diameter, the cluster is packed with about 10 million stars much older than the Sun. 

Omega Cen is the largest of 200 or so known globular clusters that roam the halo of our Milky Way galaxy. Though most star clusters consist of stars with the same age and composition, the enigmatic Omega Cen exhibits the presence of different stellar populations with a spread of ages and chemical abundances.

In fact, Omega Cen may be the remnant core of a small galaxy merging with the Milky Way.
