Strange glow / Brilho estranho

Esta foto da NASA foi tirada com luz próxima ao infravermelho pelo Telescópio Espacial Hubble. Cientistas ainda estão por descobrir o que causou a estranha estrura em espiral. Tampouco sabem por que brilha.  O brilho pode ser causado pela luz refletida de estrelas próximas.

Assim como para a espiral em si, a suposição currente é que se trata do resultado de uma estrela um um sistema binário entrando na nebulosa planetária phaso, quando sua atmosfera exterior é ejetada. Dada a taxa de expansão do gás em espiral, uma nova camada deverá aparecer a cada 800  anos, praticamente o mesmo tempo que as duas estrelas levam para orbitar uma à outra.

This NASA photo was taken in near-infrared light by the Hubble Space Telescope. Scientists have yet to discover what caused the strange spiral structure. Nor do they know why it glows. The glow may be caused by light reflected from nearby stars.

As for the spiral itself, current supposition is that this is the result of a star in a binary star system entering the planetary nebula phase, when its outer atmosphere is ejected. Given the expansion rate of the spiral gas, a new layer must appear about every 800 years, a close match to the time it takes for the two stars to orbit each other.
