The births are a noticeable success for Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent because the leopards are notoriously difficult to breed.
Howletts has housed clouded leopards, originally from South East Asia, since the late 1960. Clouded leopards (neofilis nebulosa) are found in the tropical forests of southern China, South East Asia, Sumatra and Borneo. Elusive, secretive and mainly nocturnal, they are extremely difficult to study in the wild and most of the information about them has come from observing captive animals. It takes its name from the cloud-like spots of its coat that provide camouflage in its forest habitat. Males weigh up to 50lbs with females much smaller. They are expert climbers and feed on monkeys, birds, fish, squirrels and wild pig.
