Três milhões de sóis

A recém-descoberta segunda estrela mais brilhante de nossa galáxia, a Estrela da Nebulosa de Peônia, aparece na região central da Via Láctea, em imagem captada pelo Telescópio Espacial Spitzer.

Embora sua existência já fosse conhecida, só quando os intrumentos de infravermelho do Spitzer puderam penetrar a poeira da nebulosa os cientistas puderam calcular o seu brilho. A estrela emite luz equivalente a 3,2 milhões de sóis.

The newly discovered second brightest star in our Galaxy, the "Peony Nebula Star," is seen in the central region of our Milky Way as captured by the Spitzer Space Telescope.

While the existence of the star was already known, it wasn't until the Spitzer's infrared instruments were able to pierce the dust in the nebula that scientists could calculate it's brightness. The star puts out light equivalent to 3.2 million suns.
