Ultraviolet Earth from an Observatory on the Moon | A Terra em ultravioleta vista por um observatorio na Lua

Qual planeta é este? É a Terra.Esta foto em cores artificiais mostra como a Terra brilha em luz ultravioleta (UV). A imagem é  historica porque foi registrada da superficie da Lua pelo unico observatorio lunar da humanidade. 

Embora muito pouca luz UV seja transmitida através da atmosfera terrestre, o tanto que a luz solar consegue fazer passar através da atmosfera pode causar quimaduras solares. A parte da Terra voltada para o Sol reflete muita luz UV, mas talvez mais interessante seja o lado voltado para longe do Sol. 

Aqui, as faixas de emissão UV são resultantes de auroras, e causadas por particulas carregadas expelidas pelo Sol. Outros planetas que apresentam auroras em UV são Marte, Saturno, Jupiter e Urano.

Which planet is this? Earth. The featured false color picture shows how the Earth shines in ultraviolet (UV) light. The image is historic because it was taken from the surface of the Moon by humanity's only lunar observatory. 

Although very little UV light is transmitted through the Earth's atmosphere, what sunlight does make it through might cause a sunburn. The part of the Earth facing the Sun reflects much UV light, but perhaps more interesting is the side facing away from the Sun. 

Here bands of UV emission are the result of auroras and are caused by charged particles expelled by the Sun. Other planets showing auroras in the UV include Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, and Uranus.
