Uma joia no ceu do Sul, a Grande Nebulosa de Carina, também chamada NGC 3372, é uma das maiores regiões de formação estelar de nossa galáxia. Facilmente visivel a olho nu, ela situa-se bem alto acima da colina caracteristica do Lago Ballard, o efêmero lago salino no estado de Australia Ocidental, nesta serena paisagem noturna de 25 de dezembro de 2017.
A Via Lactea se estende além do horizonte sul. Juntamente com ela, as brilhantes estrelas Alfa e Beta Centauro situam-se bem acima do flanco direito da colina, com o Cruzeiro do Sul e a escura nebulosa do Saco de Carvão sobre o topo da colina.
Baseada em um mosaico de 22 paineis, a cena foi cortada para revelar mais detalhadamente a beleza dessa região do sul da Via Lactea. Naquela curta manhã de verão, uma montagem de camera para rastrear estrelas foi usada para registrar as imagens de mosaico do ceu, mas desativada para fotografar o primeiro plano em luar.

A jewel of the southern sky, the Great Carina Nebula, also known as NGC 3372, is one of our galaxy's largest star forming regions. Easily visible to the unaided eye it stands high above the signature hill of Lake Ballard, ephemeral salt lake of Western Australia, in this serene night skyscape from December 25, 2017.
The Milky Way itself stretches beyond the southern horizon. Along the Milky Way, bright stars Alpha and Beta Centauri lie just above the hill's right flank, with the Southern Cross and dark Coalsack Nebula above the hill top.
Based on a 22 panel mosaic, the scene was cropped to reveal more closely the beauty of this region of the southern Milky Way. On that short summer night, a star tracking camera mount was used to record the mosaic images of the sky, but turned off to image the foreground in moonlight.
