A Nebulosa da Cabeça de Cavalo é uma das mais famosas do firmamento. Aparece aqui como a indentação escura na nebulosa vermelha de emissões, ao centro da imagem. A parte em formato de cabeça de cavalo é escura por ser de fato uma nuvem opaca de poeira situada em frente à brilhante nebulosa vermelha de emissões.
Assim como as nuvens na atmosfera da Terra, esta nuvem cósmica tomou um formato reconhecível por mero acaso. Após muitos milhares de anos, os movimentos internos da nuvem irão, certamente, causar mudanças em sua aparência.
A cor vermelha da nebulosa de emissões é causada pela recombinação de elétrons com prótons para formar átomos de hidrogênio. À esquerda da imagem está a Nebulosa da Chama, meio alaranjada, que também contém filamentos de poeira escura.
Bem na parte inferior direita desta foto da nebulosa da Cabeça de Cavalo há uma nebulosa de reflexão azulada que reflete preferencialmente a luz azul de estrelas próximas.

The Horsehead Nebula is one of the most famous nebulae on the sky. It is visible as the dark indentation to the red emission nebula in the center of the above photograph. The horse-head feature is dark because it is really an opaque dust cloud that lies in front of the bright red emission nebula.
Like clouds in Earth's atmosphere, this cosmic cloud has assumed a recognizable shape by chance. After many thousands of years, the internal motions of the cloud will surely alter its appearance.
The emission nebula's red color is caused by electrons recombining with protons to form hydrogen atoms. On the image left is the Flame Nebula, an orange-tinged nebula that also contains filaments of dark dust.
Just to the lower left of the Horsehead nebula featured picture is a blueish reflection nebulae that preferentially reflects the blue light from nearby stars.
