Nuvens interestelares de poeira e brilhantes nebulosas são abundantes na fértil constelação de Orion. Uma das mais brilhantes, M78, está logo à esquerda do centro nesta colorida visão telescópica, cobrindo uma área ao norte do Cinturão de Orion.
A uma distância ao redor de 1.500 anos-luz, a nebulosa azulada em si tem cerca de 5 anos-luz de diâmetro. Sua cor azul deve-se ao fato de a poeira refletir preferencialmente a luz azul de estrelas quentes e jovens da região.
Escuras vielas de poeira e outras nebulosas podem facilmente ser encontradas atraves desta bela paisagem celeste. A cena também inclui a notável Nebulosa de McNeil — uma nebulosa recém-reconhecida, associada à formação de uma estrela semelhante ao Sol, e o brilho avermelhado revelador de vários objetos Herbig- Haro, jatos energéticos de estrelas em processo de formação.

Interstellar dust clouds and bright nebulae abound in the fertile constellation of Orion. One of the brightest, M78, is just left of center in this colorful telescopic view, covering an area north of Orion's belt.
At a distance of about 1,500 light-years, the bluish nebula itself is about 5 light-years across. Its blue tint is due to dust preferentially reflecting the blue light of hot, young stars in the region.
Dark dust lanes and other nebulae can easily be traced through this gorgeous skyscape. The scene also includes the remarkable McNeil's Nebula — a newly recognized nebula associated with the formation of a sun-like star, and the telltale reddish glow of many Herbig- Haro objects, energetic jets from stars in the process of formation.
