Alnitak, Alnilam e Mintaka são as brilhantes estrelas azuladas de leste para oeste (do canto inferior direito para o superior esquerdo) ao longo da diagonal nesta vista cosmica.
Também chamadas conjuntamente o Cinturão de Orion, essas três estrelas azuis supergigantes são mais quentes e muito mais massivas do que o Sol. Estão distantes da Terra entre 800 e 1.500 anos-luz, formadas nas bem estudadas nuvens interestelares de Orion.
Na verdade, nuvens de gas e poeira à deriva nesta região apresentam algumas formas surpreendentemente familiares, como a escura nebulosa da Cabeça de Cabalo e da Chama, próximo a Alnitak, no canto inferior direito.
A famosa nebulosa de Orion em si está afastada da borda direita deste colorido campo estelar. Este bem enquadrado mosaico telescopico de 2 paineis espalha-se por cerca de 4 graus no ceu.

Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka, are the bright bluish stars from east to west (lower right to upper left) along the diagonal in this cosmic vista.
Otherwise known as the Belt of Orion, these three blue supergiant stars are hotter and much more massive than the Sun. They lie from 800 to 1,500 light-years away, born of Orion's well-studied interstellar clouds.
In fact, clouds of gas and dust adrift in this region have some surprisingly familiar shapes, including the dark Horsehead Nebula and Flame Nebula near Alnitak at the lower right.
The famous Orion Nebula itself is off the right edge of this colorful starfield. This well-framed, 2-panel telescopic mosaic spans about 4 degrees on the sky.
