O centro da Nebulosa da Lagoa é Nebula um redemoinho de espetaculares formações estelares. Visíveis embaixo, à esquerda, ao menos duas nuvens em formato de um longo funil, cada qual com cerca de meio ano-luz de comprimento, foram formadas por extremos ventos estelares e intensa luz estelar energética.
A tremendamente brilhante estrela próxima, Hershel 36, ilumina a área. Vastas paredes de poeira ocultam e avermelham outras jovens estrelas quentes. Quando a energia dessas estrelas cai nos frios gás e poeira, grandes diferenças de temperatura em regiões adjacentes podem ser criadas, gerando tesouras de vento, que podem causar os funis.
Esta foto, que se abrange cerca de 5 anos-luz, foi tirada em 1995 pelo telescópio orbital terrestre Hubble. A nebulosa da Lagoa, também chamada M8, está distante da Terra cerca de 5.000 anos luz, na direção da constelação de Sagitário, o Arqueiro.

The center of the Lagoon Nebula is a whirlwind of spectacular star formation. Visible on the lower left, at least two long funnel-shaped clouds, each roughly half a light-year long, have been formed by extreme stellar winds and intense energetic starlight.
The tremendously bright nearby star, Hershel 36, lights the area. Vast walls of dust hide and redden other hot young stars. As energy from these stars pours into the cool dust and gas, large temperature differences in adjoining regions can be created generating shearing winds which may cause the funnels. This picture, spanning about 5 light years, was taken in 1995 by the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope. The Lagoon Nebula, also known as M8, lies about 5000 light years distant toward the constellation of Sagittarius.
