O que ilumina a Nebulosa da Chama? Distante mil e quinhentos anos luz, próxima à constelação de Orion, situa-se uma nebulosa que, por conta de suas vielas de poeira escura e também brilhante, aparece, à esquerda, como um fogo crescente.
Mas o fogo, que é a rápida aquisição de oxigênio, não é o que faz esta Chama brilhar. Em vez disso, a estrela Alnitak, a estrela mais ao leste no Cinturão de Orion, visível bem à direita da nebulosa, joga luz energética na Chama, atirando elétrons para longe das grandes nuvens de gás hidrogênio que residem lá. Boa parte do brilho ocorre quando os elétrons e o hidrogênio ionizado se recombinam.
A foto acima, em cores artificiais da Nebulosa da Chama (NGC 2024) foi tirada como uma composição de luz visível e infravermelha, sendo a última faixa de energia onde jovens aglomerados estelares tornam-se visíveis. A Nebulosa da Chama faz parte do Complexo da Nuvem Molecular de Orion, uma região de formação estelar que inclui a famosa Nebulosa da Cabeça de Cavalo.

What lights up the Flame Nebula? Fifteen hundred light years away towards the constellation of Orion lies a nebula which, from its glow and dark dust lanes, appears, on the left, like a billowing fire.
But fire, the rapid acquisition of oxygen, is not what makes this Flame glow. Rather the bright star Alnitak, the easternmost star in the Belt of Orion visible just to the right of the nebula, shines energetic light into the Flame that knocks electrons away from the great clouds of hydrogen gas that reside there. Much of the glow results when the electrons and ionized hydrogen recombine.
The above false-color picture of the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) was taken is a composite of both visible and infrared light, the later energy band being where a young star cluster becomes visible. The Flame Nebula is part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, a star-forming region that includes the famous Horsehead Nebula.
