Sagittarius Dwarf / Anã Sagitário

Esta imagem gerada por computador, divulgada pela revista Nature, mostra o impacto da galáxia elíptica Anã Sagitário (a corrente azul de estrelas) com a Galáxia Via Láctea  (disco multicolorido), contra um plano de fundo de galáxias visto no Campo Profundo Hubble.

Uma nova teoria propõe que a formação dos braços da Via Láctea, uma galáxia com cerca de 200 bilhões de estrelas, com braços espirais que giram ao redor de um fino disco, deu-se quando ela foi atingida pela  galáxia anã, atirando cascatas de estrelas voando em direção à borda galáctica.

O gigantesco impacto atirou jatos de estrelas de ambas as galáxias. As estrelas foram depois puxadas para fora pela rotação da Via Láctea, formando os braços que se nota hoje em dia.

A new theory posits that the formation of the arms of the Milky Way, a galaxy of some 200 billion stars with spiral limbs that whirl around a thin disk, was formed when it was hit by the dwarf galaxy, sending cascades of stars flying to the galactic rim.

The giant impact sent streams of stars from both galaxies. The stars were eventually tugged outward by the Milky Way's rotation into the limbs that we perceive today.
