Cientistas estão em campanha para achar uma palavra que os ajude a descrever números maiores que 1.00.000.000.000.000.000.000.000.000, em meio a preocupações a respeito da possível insuficiência do atual sistema de unidades.

Uma campanha por "hella" para junta-se aos termos que significam "quilo", "mega" e "giga" como prefixos internacionalmente aceitos está ganhando adeptos.

Mais de 20.000 cientistas, estudantes e o público em geral assinaram uma petição online apoiando a nova quantidade, que poderia ser empregada para figuras com 27 zeros após o primeiro dígito. Atualmente, o prefixo mais alto permitido pelo Sistema Internacional de Unidades (SI) é o "yota", para 24 zeros.

Austin Sendek, o estudante de física da Universidade da Califórnia que deu início à campanha, disse que o recente desenvolvimento científico necessita a extensão das escalas de medida.

"A análise de vários fenômenos físicos revela quantidades naturais que ultrapassam 27 ordens de magnitude, um número atualmente ignorado pelo Sistema SI,"escreveu ele na petição online do Facebook delineando a causa do hella, no link abaixo.

"Designar um prefixo para 10^27 é de importância fundamental para cientistas de todos os campos. Esta número é significativo para vários cálculos cruciais, inclusive a wattagem do Sol, distâncias intergaláticas, ou o número de átomos em uma grande amostra."

A quantidade de energia emitida pelo Sol seria mais elegantemente expressa como 0.3 hellawatts que 300 yottawatts, acrescentou.

"Designating a prefix for 10^27 is of critical importance for scientists in all fields. This number is significant in many crucial calculations, including the wattage of the sun, distances between galaxies, or the number of atoms in a large sample."

The amount of energy released by the Sun would be more elegantly expressed as 0.3 hellawatts than as 300 yottawatts, he added.
