Ilhas Kerguelen

Esta imagem de satélite mostra as Ilhas Kerguelen, no sul do Oceano Índico, a sudeste de Madagascar e a norte da Antártica.

A cadeia de ilhas é território francês. Não há habitantes nativos, apenas uma pequena equipe de cientistas e pesquisadores fica por lá.

A ilha principal, Grande Terre, é a maior parte do que se vê na foto, embora o arquipélago inclua umas 300 ilhas menores.

Grande Terre parece contribuir para o surgimento de interessantes formações de nuvens. Próximas, ocorrem nuvens em ondas, que se formam quando ar estável é perturbado, fazendo ar mover-se ao longo da perturbação, como ondas num lago.

Se a camada de ar estiver úmida, onde o ar flui para cima, uma nuvem forma-se na crista. Onde flui para baixo, a nuvem se evapora, dando ao conjunto de nuvens o formato ondulado.

This island chain is a French territory. There are no native inhabitants, but a small staff of scientists and researchers stays there.

The main island, Grande Terre, is mostly what is visible in this image, though the archipelago does include 300 or so smaller islands. Grande Terre seems to contribute to interesting cloud formations.

Nearby are wave clouds, which are created when stable air is disturbed, causing air to move along the disturbance, like waves in a pond.

If the layer of stable air is humid, where the air flows up, a cloud forms at the crest. Where it flows down, the cloud evaporates, giving the clouds the rippled pattern.
