Hexágono de Saturno / Saturn's hexagon

Acredite ou não, este é o polo norte de Saturno.

Não está claro como um sistema de nuvens hexagonal que circunda o polo norte de Saturno foi criado, mantém sua forma, ou quanto irá durar.

Originalmente descoberto durante os voos da Voyager sobre Saturno nos anos 1980, ninguém jamais vira algo semelhante no Sistema Solar.

Embora seu brilho infravermelho fosse visível anteriormente para a sonda Cassini, agora orbitando Saturno, ao longo do ano passado o misterioso vórtex hexagonal tornou-se totalmente iluminado pela luz solar pela primeira vez durante a visita da Cassini.

Desde então, a Cassini captou imagens do hexágono rotativo em frequência de luz visível, vezes suficientes para criar um filme.

O centro do polo não fora bem fotografado e foi excluído. Este filme mostra vários e inesperados movimentos das nuvens, como as ondas emanando dos cantos do hexágono. Cientistas planetários certamente continuarão estudando esta tão singular formação de nuvens por um bom tempo.

Believe it or not, this is the North Pole of Saturn.

It is unclear how an unusual hexagonal cloud system that surrounds Saturn's north pole was created, keeps its shape, or how long it will last.

Originally discovered during the Voyager flybys of Saturn in the 1980s, nobody has ever seen anything like it elsewhere in the Solar System.

Although its infrared glow was visible previously to the Cassini spacecraft now orbiting Saturn, over the past year the mysterious hexagonal vortex became fully illuminated by sunlight for the first time during the Cassini's visit.

Since then, Cassini has imaged the rotating hexagon in visible light enough times to create a time-lapse movie.

The pole center was not well imaged and has been excluded. This movie shows many unexpected cloud motions, such as waves emanating from the corners of the hexagon.

Planetary scientists are sure to continue to study this most unusual cloud formation for quite some time.
