Neda Agha Soltan, 27, foi apelidada de Anjo da Liberdade, após um vídeo parecer mostrá-la sendo alvejada com um tiro por um atirador de elite do governo, um "sniper".

A cena mostra Neda - Seu nome em farsi significa "O chamado" - caminhando com seu pai entre os manifestantes, então separados quando ela foi atingida, e os circunstantes tentam salvar-lhe a vida (ela parece ter sido atingida na carótida).

Pôsteres online da mulher coberta com sangue rapidamente brotaram na internet. Alguns fazem correlação com o desconhecido desafiador dos tanques de guerra na Praça Tiananmen, em 1898, na China, ou com aquela brutal foto do comunista vietnamita sendo morto com um tiro de revólver na têmpora, em 1968, pelo coronel Nguyen Ngoc Loan.

O vídeo foi postado no YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, estampado em capas de jornais, e visto por milhões de pessoas. Mensagens de empatia e ultraje inundaram a internet após a postagem dos vídeos.

As autoridades iranianas enviaram uma circular às mesquitas proibindo orações coletivas pela mulher. Em vão. O mundo todo ora coletivamente por Neda, atendendo ao seu chamado por liberdade.

Neda Agha Soltan, 27, was dubbed the Angel of Freedom after a video which appeared to show her being shot by a government sniper was posted on the internet.

Graphic scenes show Neda – her name means "the call" in farsi – walking with her father among demonstrators, then separately when she was shot as well as attempts to save her life.

Online posters of the woman covered in blood quickly emerged, included one modelled on a prominent image of Barack Obama during the last US presidential campaign.

Some online posts speculated the image would rank alongside that of the unnamed man standing in front of a tank in Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989 and the summary execution of a Vietnamese Communist prisoner by Colonel Nugyen Ngoc Loan in 1968.

Footage was posted on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook and was viewed by tens of thousands. Messages of sympathy and outrage flooded the internet following the posting of the videos.

The Iranian authorities have now sent out a circular to mosques banning collective prayers for the woman. It doesn't matter. The whole world now prays for Neda, attending her call for freedom.
