Esta estrutura rochosa não é apenas surreal — é real. A razão pela qual ela não é mais famosa é que ela é, talvez, menor do que se pode imaginar: a pedra no topo se projeta por apenas alguns metros.
Mesmo assim, a formação aflorada King of Wings, localizada no Novo México, EUA, é um exemplo fascinante de um incomum tipo de estrutura rochosa chamada hoodoo. Hoodoos podem se formar quando uma camada de rocha dura se sobrepõe a outra, de rocha mais mole em erosão. Imaginar os detalhes para incorporar este hoodoo em uma foto de céu noturno foi uma tarefa que levou mais de ano.
Além de esperar por uma convenientemente pitoresca noite atrás de um céu com poucas nuvens, o primeiro plano teria de ser iluminado arificialmente de maneira exata em ralação ao brilho natural do plano de fundo.
Após muito planejamento e espera, a foto final, mostrada aqui, foi tirada em maio de 2016. Imitando a barra horizontal, o céu no plano de fundo mostra a faixa da Via Láctea estendendo-se ao alto.

This rock structure is not only surreal -- it's real. The reason it's not more famous is that it is, perhaps, smaller than one might guess: the capstone rock overhangs only a few meters.
Even so, the King of Wings outcrop, located in New Mexico, USA, is a fascinating example of an unusual type of rock structure called a hoodoo. Hoodoos may form when a layer of hard rock overlays a layer of eroding softer rock. Figuring out the details of incorporating this hoodoo into a night-sky photoshoot took over a year.
Besides waiting for a suitably picturesque night behind a sky with few clouds, the foreground had to be artificially lit just right relative to the natural glow of the background.
After much planning and waiting, the final shot, featured here, was taken in May 2016. Mimicking the horizontal bar, the background sky features the band of our Milky Way Galaxy stretching overhead.
