Transfundindo a luz solar através de um céu ainda escuro, esta excepcional aparição de nuvens notilucentes foi fotografada no começo do mês passado sobre a Ilha de Gotland, na Suíça.
Da fronteira do espaço, cerca de 80 quilômetros acima da superfície da Terra, as gélidas nuvens refletem a luz solar mesmo com o Sol ainda abaixo do horizonte, visto do solo. Geralmente encontradas a altas latitudes nos meses de verão, a nuvens brilho noturno deram um grande espetáculo neste mês de julho.
Também chamadas nuvens polares mesoféricas, entende-se que elas se formam quando o vapor de água dirigido à fria atmosfera superior se condensa nas finas partículas de poeira oriundas da desintegração de meteoros ou de cinzas vulcânicas. A missão AIM da NASA fornece projeções diárias de nuvens notilucentes vistas do espaço.

Transfusing sunlight through a still dark sky, this exceptional display of noctilucent clouds was captured earlier this month above the island of Gotland, Sweden.
From the edge of space, about 80 kilometers above Earth's surface, the icy cloudsreflect sunlight even though the Sun itself is below the horizon as seen from the ground. Usually spotted at high latitudes in summer months the night shining clouds made a strong showing this July.
Also known as polar mesopheric clouds they are understood to form as water vapor driven into the cold upper atmosphere condenses on the fine dust particles supplied by disintegrating meteors or volcanic ash. NASA's AIM mission provides daily projections of noctilucent clouds as seen from space.
