O centro da Nebulosa da Lagoa é um torvelinho de espetaculares formações estelares. Visíveis próximas ao centro da imagem há ao menos duas longas nuvens em forma de funil, cada qual com meio ano-luz de extensão, formadas por fortíssimos ventos estelares e luz estelar de intensa energia.
A tremendamente brilhante estrela próxima Herschel 36 ilumina a região. Muralhas de poeira ocultam e avermelham outras estrelas jovens e quentes. Quando a energia dessas estrelas se espalha pela poeira e gás frios, podem ocorrer grandes diferenças de temperatura nas regiões adjacentes, gerando ventos cortantes, que podem ser a causa dos funis.
Esta foto, espalhando-se por cerca de 5 anos-luz, combina imagens obtidas pelo Telescópio Espacial Orbital Hubble. A Nebulosa da Lagoa, também chamada M8, está situada a cerca de 5.000 anos-luz da Terra, na direção da constelação do Sagitário.

The center of the Lagoon Nebula is a whirlwind of spectacular star formation. Visible near the image center, at least two long funnel-shaped clouds, each roughly half a light-year long, have been formed by extreme stellar winds and intense energetic starlight.
The tremendously bright nearby star, Herschel 36, lights the area. Walls of dust hide and redden other hot young stars. As energy from these stars pours into the cool dust and gas, large temperature differences in adjoining regions can be created generating shearing winds which may cause the funnels.
This picture, spanning about 5 light years, combines images taken by the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope. The Lagoon Nebula, also known as M8, lies about 5,000 light years distant toward the constellation of Sagittarius.
