O que floresce neste campo de poeira estelar escura ? A Nebulosa de Iris. A impressionante cor azul da Nebulosa de Iris é criada pela luz da brilhante estrela SAO 19158 refletindo-se de uma densa porção de poeira normalmente escura.
Não só a estrela em si é em grande parte azul, como a sua luz azul é refletida preferencialmente pela poeira — o mesmo efeito que torna azul o céu da Terra.
O tom marrom da poeira dominante deve-se em parte à fotoluminescência — poeira convertendo radiação de luz ultravioleta em luz vermelha.
Catalogada como NGC 7023, a Nebulosa de Iris é estudada com frequência devido à incomum prevalecência ali de Hidrocarbonetos Policíclicos Aromáticos (PAHs), complexas moléculas que também são liberadas na atmosfera da Terra durante a combustão incompleta de incêndios florestais.
A brilhante porção azul da Nebulosa de Iris estende-se por cerca de seis anos-luz. A Nebulosa de Iris, na foto acima, situa-se à distância de 1.300 anos-luz, e pode ser encontrada com pequenos telescópios, na direção da constelação de Cefeu.
