M78 e nuvens de poeira de reflexão

Um brilho misterioso e sombrias colunas  de poeira escura destacam  M78 e outra nebulosa de reflexão na Constelação de Orion. A escura poeira de filamentos não só absorve luz, como também reflete a luz de várias estrelas brilhantes azuis  recentemente formadas na nebulosa. 

Das duas nebulosas de reflexão mostradas acima, a mais famosa é M78, aparecendo no centro da imagem, enquanto NGC 2071 pode ser vista abaixo e à sua esquerda. O mesmo tipo de difusão de luz que dá ao céu diurno da Terra a cor azul acentua o azul na nebulosa. 

M78 tem cerca de cinco anos-luz de diâmetro, sendo visível através de pequenos telescópios. Entretanto, M78 aparece nesta imagem como era há 1.600 anos porque esse é o tempo  que sua luz leva para vir de lá até aqui. 

M78 pertence ao  Complexo de Nuvens Moleculares de Orion, que é maior e abriga a Grande Nebulosa em Orion e a Nebulosa da Cabeça de Cavalo.

An eerie blue glow and ominous columns of dark dust highlight M78 and other bright reflection nebula in the constellation of Orion. The dark filamentary dust not only absorbs light, but also reflects the light of several bright blue stars that formed recently in the nebula. 

Of the two reflection nebulas pictured above, the more famous nebula is M78, in the image center, while NGC 2071 can be seen to its lower left. The same type of scattering that colors the daytime sky further enhances the blue color. 

M78 is about five light-years across and visible through a small telescope. M78 appears above only as it was 1600 years ago, however, because that is how long it takes light to go from there to here. 

M78 belongs to the larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex that contains the Great Nebula in Orion and the Horsehead Nebula.
