Alnitak, Alnilam e Mintaka são as estrelas brilhantes azuladas do leste para o oeste (do canto inferior direito para o superior esquerdo) através da diagonal nesta deslumbrante visão cósmica.
Também chamadas o Cinturão de Orion, essas três estrelas supergigantes azuis são mais quentes e têm muito mais massa do que o Sol. Elas estão situadas a cerca de 1.500 anos-luz da Terra, nascidas das muito estudadas nuvens interestelares de Orion.
De fato, nuvens de gás e poeira à deriva nesta regão assumem algumas formas intrigantes e algumas supreendentemente familiares, inclusive a escura Nebulosa da Cabeça de Cavalo e a Nebulosa da Chama, próxima a Alnitak, embaixo, à direita.
A famosa Nebulosa de Orion está fora da borda direita deste colorido campo estrelado. A bem enquadrada imagem telescópica de campo amplo estende-se por cerca de 4 graus no céu.
Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka, are the bright bluish stars from east to west (lower right to upper left) along the diagonal in this gorgeous cosmic vista.
Otherwise known as the Belt of Orion, these three blue supergiant stars are hotter and much more massive than the Sun. They lie about 1,500 light-years away, born of Orion's well-studied interstellar clouds.
In fact, clouds of gas and dust adrift in this region have intriguing and some surprisingly familiar shapes, including the dark Horsehead Nebula and Flame Nebula near Alnitak at the lower right.
The famous Orion Nebula itself is off the right edge of this colorful star field. The well-framed, wide-field telescopic image spans about 4 degrees on the sky.
