Vídeo: Partindo da Terra | Leaving Earth

Como seria a sesação de partir do  planeta Terra? Um acontecimento assim foi gravado em vídeo de maneira bastante detalhada pela espaçonave MESSENGER, quando deixou a Terra para trás, há oito anos, em direção ao  planeta Mercúrio. 

A Terra pode ser vista girando neste vídeo de lapso temporal, à medida que vai dimunindo com a distância. O hemisfério da Terra iluminado pelo Sol é tão brilhante que ofusca as estrelas de fundo. A espaçonave robótica MESSENGER está atualmente orbitando Mercúrio, e concluiu recentemente seu primeiro mapa completo da superfície do planeta. 

A MESSENGER continuou  observando seu planeta de origem ocasionalmente. A MESSENGER é uma das poucas coisas criadas na Terra que a deixaram para nunca mais retornar — ao final de sua missão, a MESSENGER irá se espatifar contra a superfície de Mercúrio.


What it would look like to leave planet Earth? Such an event was recorded visually in great detail by the MESSENGER spacecraft as it swung back past the Earth, eight years ago, on its way in toward the planet Mercury.

Earth can be seen rotating in this time-lapse video, as it recedes into the distance. The sunlit half of Earth is so bright that background stars are not visible. The robotic MESSENGER spacecraft is now in orbit around Mercury and has recently concluded the first complete map of the surface. 

On occasion, MESSENGER has continued to peer back at its home world. MESSENGER is one of the few things created on the Earth that has left and will never return -- at the end of its mission MESSENGER will be crashed into Mercury's surface.
