A imagem, que saiu ano passado no jornal Science, mostra minúsculas fibras plásticas, cada qual com diâmetro de 1/500 da espessura de um fio de cabelo humano (250 nanômetros).
Eles envolveram espontaneamente um bola de plástico verde quando imergidas em um líquido em evaporação.
A imagem, produzida com um microscópio de varredura eletrônica, e digitalmente melhorada em suas cores, é tida como um meio de demonstrar novas maneiras de controlar a automontagem de polímeros.
A foto foi feita por Sung Hoon Kang, Boaz Pokroy e Joanna Aizenberg, da Escola de Engenharia e Ciências Aplicadas de Harvard.
Ganhou o primeiro prêmio de fotografia na categoria International Science and Engineering Visualisation Challenge.

The image, first reported last year in the journal Science, shows tiny plastic fibres, each with a diameter measuring a 1/500th of a human hair (250 nanometres).
They spontaneously wrapped around a green plastic ball when immersed in evaporating liquid.
The image, produced with a scanning electronic microscope and digitally enhanced for colour, is said to demonstrate new ways of controlling the self-assembly of polymer hairs.
The photograph was produced by Sung Hoon Kang, Boaz Pokroy and Joanna Aizenberg, from the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
It won first prize in the photography category of the International Science and Engineering Visualisation Challenge.
