On the first evening of the ninth lunar month and for nine days afterwards, the Thai island of Phuket holds its annual Taoist Vegetarian festival. Started in 1825 by Chinese immigrants and featuring piercings, firecrackers and possessions by deities, it is a bizarre and colourful event. Before Phuket became a world-class tourist destination, it was a centre for the tin trade. In the 19th century, thousands of Hokkien Chinese immigrated here to work, bringing with them their Taoist beliefs and establishing numerous temples and shrines.
