Operation Ice Bridge / Operação Ponte de Gelo

Em 16 de outubro, os pesquisadores da Operação Ice Bridge (Ponte de Gelo) e tripulação completaram o primeiro voo da Campanha Antárctica.

O voo foi feito a partir da ponta sul da América do Sul e seu objetivo primário era a Plataforma de Gelo Getz, ao longo da Costa Amundsen da Antárctica.

Durante o voo ao longo da Costa Amundsen, o sistema de câmeras digitais de mapeamento em direção ao solo captou esta imagem de gelo marinho de uma altitude de, pelo menos, 20.000 pés.

O avião DC-8 fez dois voos paralelos ao longo da costa, um pouco além da costa, sobre a plataforma de gelo flutuante, o outro sobre o continente.

Medindo ambos os lados da "linha de solo" entre o gelo flutuante e o gelo continental, cientistas conseguiram determinar a taxa à qual esta parte da plataforma de gelo próxima à costa está se derretendo.

On 16 October, Operation Ice Bridge researchers and crew completed the first flight of the Antarctic campaign.

The flight was made from the southern tip of South America and its primary target was the Getz Ice Shelf along Antarctica's Amundsen Coast.

During the flight along Amundsen Coast, the aircraft's downward-looking digital mapping system camera captured this image of sea ice from an altitude of at least 20,000 feet.

The DC-8 aircraft flew two parallel tracks along the coast, one just offshore over the floating ice shelf, and one just inland.

By measuring on either side of the 'grounding line' between the floating ice and the ice on land, scientists can determine the rate at which this near-shore part of the ice shelf is melting.
