The Great Bitter Lake / O Grande Lago Bitter

O Grande Lago Bitter é um dos vários lagos localizados ao longo do Canal de Suez, que liga os mares Mediterrâneo, no oeste, e o Vermelho.

Como o canal foi construído apenas para permitir o tráfego dos navios em uma só calha, o Grande Lago Bitter é um local onde os navios podem mudar sua posição em fila antes de seguir ou para Port Said ao norte, ou para o porto de Suez para o sul.

O lago também provê um porto intermediário para os navios em travessia do Canal, uma jornada que, geralmente, leva 14 horas de ponta a ponta.

Inúmeros navios, alguns a vapor, outros ancorados, são visíveis à direita da imagem.

A cidade de Fayid (também pronuncia-se Fayed), visível ao longo da costa oeste do lago (embaixo, na foto) é destino turístico de residentes no Cairo, especialmente nos meses de verão.

The Great Bitter Lake is one of several lakes located along the Suez Canal, which connects the eastern Mediterranean and Red Seas.

As the canal is built only to allow ships to travel in a single lane, the Great Bitter Lake is a location where ships can change their position in line before proceeding to either Port Said to the north, or the port of Suez to the south.

The lake also provides an intermediate harbour for ships traversing the Canal, a journey that typically takes 14 hours end to end. Several ships, some under power and some anchored, are visible in the right of this image.

The town of Fayid (also spelled as Fayed), visible along the western shore of the lake (bottom of image) is a tourist destination for residents of Cairo, particularly in the summer months.
