A foto, deslumbrante, é a imagem real de dois jovens, iluminados por um fash vermelho, observando através de um vale escuro, a nossa Via Láctea. Visível a olho nu, a Via Láctea aparece como uma faixa leitosa de luz branca que se arqueia ao longo do céu noturno. Com filtros fotográficos especiais, é possível revelar mais detalhes da galáxia. Acredita-se que tenha cerca de 100.000 anos-luz de diâmetro, contendo mais de 200 bilhões de estrelas (sóis). Nosso Sol está localizado num dos seus braços espirais, a cerca de 27.000 anos-luz do seu centro.
Two youngsters, illuminated by a red flash, look out across a dark valley at the Milky Way, the galaxy which hosts our own solar system. Visible with the naked eye, the Milky May appears as a hazy band of white light that arches across the night sky. Using special photographic filters, it is possible to reveal more of the detail of the galaxy. It is thought to be about 100,000 light years in diameter and contains more than 200 billion stars (suns). Our own sun resides on one of the galaxy’s outer spiral arms, about 27,000 light years from the center of the galaxy.
