É uma criação de Daniel Ek, um sueco, cuja ambição é tornar todas as músicas do mundo acessíveis através de seu site. Ele tem um longo caminho pela frente, mas o Spotify já tem uma impressionante discoteca com mais de seis milhões de faixas das maiores gravadoras, com cerca de 10.000 novas músicas adicionadas diariamente.

Os usuários simplesmente procuram pela música e clicam "play". Cada pessoas pode montar uma lista pernonalizada de canções prediletas para cada ocasião.

Do you like the sound of Return of the Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons, number five in Rob's list of "Five Best Side One Track Ones"? Well, you could go looking for it in HMV, or try to buy it on Amazon, but more likely you will log on to Spotif and be listening to it in the next 30 seconds.

If music is the soundtrack to our lives, then Spotify is the way we should be listening to that soundtrack. It allows users to listen to millions of songs for free, on their computers, over the internet. Spotify is a "streaming" service, which means that you simply listen to the songs, just as you would on a radio station, rather than buy or download them as you do from other websites, such as Apple's iTunes.

Since it was launched in the UK last year, more than two million people have signed up to the service, and Spotify is also enjoying significant success in its native Sweden, as well as in Norway, Finland, France and Spain.

Spotify is the brainchild of Daniel Ek, a Swedish entrepreneur, whose ambition is to make "all the world's music" accessible through his site. He is a long way from achieving that dream, but Spotify already boasts an impressive library of more than six million tracks from all the major record labels, with around 10,000 new songs added every day.

Users simply search for the songs they want and hit "play". You can build your own playlists of favourite songs, creating soundtracks that match the mood or situation. Spotify has become a hit at dinner parties, allowing the host to cue up a long list of songs without having to leap up halfway through the meal to change CDs, or adjust the iPod.

Best of all, though, Spotify takes a leaf out of social-networking websites, such as Facebook and Twitter, by allowing users to share lists of their favourite songs with other Spotify fans.
