O eclipse do Sol já passou faz algum tempo, mas continuamos desvendando algumas curiosidades a respeito desse fascinante fenômeno.

O céu nublado sobre Wuhan, na China, ocultou a delicada corona solar durante o eclipse solar total de julho.

Ainda assim, a silhueta da Lua foi ressaltada por estes cintilantes diamantes à medida que a fase total do eclipse terminava.

Causados pelo brilho da luz solar percorrendo declives e vales no terreno irregular ao longo da extremidade lunar, o efeito é conhecido como Pérolas (ou diamantes) de Baily, em homenagem a Francis Baily, que chamou atenção para o fenômeno, em 1836.

A aparência das pérolas no início ou final de um eclipse solar total é também conhecida como o Efeito Anel de Diamantes.

Nesta notável imagem, uma pequena e rósea proeminência solar também aparece, visível ao longo da borda, abaixo dos diamantes.

Cloudy skies over Wuhan, China hid the delicate solar corona during July's total eclipse of the Sun. Still, the Moon's silhouette was highlighted by these glistening diamonds as the total eclipse phase ended.

Caused by bright sunlight streaming through dips and valleys in the irregular terrain along the Moon's edge, the effect is known as Baily's Beads, named after Francis Baily who called attention to the phenomenon in 1836.

The dramatic appearance of the beads at the beginning or end of a total solar eclipse is also known as the Diamond Ring effect.
