Ela está em prisão domiciliar há vários anos, por ser opor à decrépita junta de ditadores que governa o país que se chamava Birmânia, hoje Mianmar.

Hoje, as atenções se voltam novamente para ela, em homenagem ao seu 64º aniversário, comemorado dentro da prisão Insein, em Ragun, Mianmar.

Ali, a heróica prêmio Nobel, presa há mais de 19 anos, será julgada por "violação de sua prisão domiciliar", que estava para terminar. Tudo porque um homem foi flagrado nadando no lago de sua casa. Se condenada, e ninguém duvida de que o será, ela pegará mais cinco anos de prisão, e assim, a junta de ditadores a manterá fora do jogo político por mais um bom tempo.

Em 1990, seu partido, NLD, venceu as eleições, mas a junta se recusou a honrar o resultado e negou-lhe a posse.

Today, attempions turn to her in commemoration of her 64th birthday in the Yangon's Insein Prison, where the heroic woman, Nobel laureate, will face a trial for "violating her home arrest", whose term was about to end. If convicted, she'll serve another five years.

And thus, the decrepit military junta that rules the country will keep her apart from the politics game for another long time.

She has spent most of the past 19 years in detention, after her NLD party won elections in 1990, a result the junta refused to honour. She was re-arrested last month after an American man swam to her lakeside home. Yes, unbelievably, this is the reason for charging her with "breaking her prison".

The trial is expected to deliver a guilty verdict. It has been delayed to allow appeals by defence lawyers to reinstate witnesses. The high court on Friday set the final appeal for 24 June.
