Pôr-do-sol em Marte / Martian sunset

Este mês, os veículos lunares da Nasa em Marte fazem aniversário de 5 anos de operação na superfície do Planeta Vermelho.

A serena visão do pôr-do-sol, parte de seu grande legado de imagens da superfície marciana, foi feita pelo veículo (rover) Spirit, em 19 de maio, 2005.

As cores da imagem foram ligeiramente reforçadas, de forma a mostrar como seria a visão para o olho humano.

Claro que finas partículas em suspensão na rala atmosfera dão ao céu uma coloração avermelhada, mas a poeira também dispersa luz azul na direção adiante, criando um céu com brilho azulado próximo ao Sol que se põe.

O Sol está se pondo detrás da parede lateral da Cratera Gusey, a cerca de 80 km de distância da câmera. Pela maior distância de Marte, o Sol aparece menos brilhante, com apenas cerca de dois terços do tamanho que é visto da Terra.

This month, the Mars Exploration Rovers are celebrating their 5th anniversary of operations on the surface of the Red Planet.

The serene sunset view, part of their extensive legacy of images from the martian surface, was recorded by the Spirit rover on May 19, 2005.

Colors in the image have been slightly exaggerated but would likely be apparent to a human explorer's eye.

Of course, fine martian dust particles suspended in the thin atmosphere lend the sky a reddish color, but the dust also scatters blue light in the forward direction, creating a bluish sky glow near the setting Sun.

The Sun is setting behind the Gusev crater rim wall some 80 kilometers (50 miles) in the distance. Because Mars is farther away, the Sun is less bright and only about two thirds the size seen from planet Earth.
