NGC 4945

Grande, cheia de poeira cósmica, a galáxia espiral NGC 4945 aparece, vista da borda, no centro desta rica imagem telescópica.

O campo de visão abrange cerca de dois graus, algo como quatro vezes o diâmetro da Lua cheia, em direção à expansiva constelação do Centauro, ao Sul.

Cerca de 13 milhões de anos-luz distante, a NGC 4945 tem quase o tamanho de nossa Via Láctea.

Mas observações de raios-X e infravermelho mostram a emissão de energia ainda mais alta e formação de novas estrelas no núcleo da NGC 4945.

A outra galáxia da imagem, a NGC 4976, é do tipo elíptica. À esquerda do centro, a NGC 4976 está muito mais distante, a cerca de 35 milhões de anos-luz, e não fisicamente associada à NGC 4945.

The field of view spans nearly 2 degrees, or about 4 times the width of the Full Moon, toward the expansive southern constellation Centaurus.

About 13 million light-years distant, NGC 4945 is almost the size of our own Milky Way Galaxy. But X-ray and infrared observations reveal even more high energy emission and star formation in the core of NGC 4945.

The other prominent galaxy in the field, NGC 4976, is an elliptical galaxy. Left of center, NGC 4976 is much farther away, at a distance of about 35 million light-years, and not physically associated with NGC 4945.
