Perdas trilionárias / Trillionaire losses

O Fundo Monetário Internacional (FMI) estima as perdas, só dos bancos americanos, em 1,4 trilhão de dólares, e pede uma ação global urgente e coordenada para estancar a crise.

Mas será mesmo que o FMI tem condições de avaliar o tamanho destas perdas? Se fosse tão fácil assim, o medo não seria tão grande. O que causa o pânico é justamente a incerteza.

A projeção é 45% maior que a anterior, de abril, que estava em US$ 945 bilhões, reafirmada há apenas dois meses. Mas isso não é tudo: A instituição calcula que os bancos globais necessitarão de mais US$ 645 bilhões nos próximos anos.

"Próximos anos"parece uma firmação um tanto vaga. É como falar em curto, médio ou longo prazos. Ninguém sabe onde cada um começa ou termina.

The International Monetary Fund today added its weight to the growing calls for a comprehensive and coordinated international response to the global financial crisis.

The institution dramatically raised its estimate of losses to the US banking system to around $1.4 trillion , 45% up from the $945billions it estimated in April and reaffirmed just two months ago.

It also estimated that the major global banks need another $675bn in new capital in the next few years. "Next few years" sounds somewhat vague. It's like talking about short, middle and long terms. No one knows when each one starts or ends.
