Guerra por um templo

Objeto de disputa entre a Tailândia e o Camboja, o templo Preah Vihear fica na fronteira entre os dois países.

Embora as autoridade tailandesas digam que o conflito é de pequena escala, o ministro do Exterior, Sompong Amornvivat, está exortando o cidadãos a deixar o Camboja.Toda a questão se resume a uma área de apenas 4,6 quilômetros quadrados de floresta fechada, onde está o templo em ruínas, cuja posse foi dada ao Camboja pela Corte Internacional de Justiça, em 1962.

A decisão aborreceu os tailandeses, que até hoje não se conformam. Mas, quando se trata de religião, a serenidade e o bom senso costumam ser postos de lado.

The sudden outbreak of fighting marks a major escalation of the confrontation between Cambodian and Thai troops.

The reason for the conflict is the dispute around Preah Vihear temple.Thai officials represented the violence as "small scale" and isolated. But Thailand's foreign minister, Sompong Amornvivat, urged all of his country's citizens to leave Cambodia. At the centre of the deadly confrontation is 1.8 square miles (4.6 sq km) of scrubby forest. Above it, on the ridge which forms the border between the two countries, stands the ruined Hindu temple of Preah Vihear, which the International Court of Justice ruled in 1962 belongs to Cambodia.

That decision still upsets most Thais, and both countries still claim the tiny plot of land next to the ruin. However, when the subject is religion, serenity and sense are put aside.
